Last Thursday, PanTerra had the opportunity to present the results and implications of the BLT‑01 exploration well during an information evening on geothermal energy in De Bilt.
Around 50 engaged local residents and local councillors attended the session, keen to learn more about the exploration well that had been visible near De Bilt for weeks. Well BLT‑01, drilled as part of the EBN SCAN programme, is providing valuable insights into the Dutch subsurface and the potential for sustainable geothermal development in the region.
PanTerra recently completed a geothermal potential study for the Province of Utrecht, evaluating where subsurface conditions in the province are favourable for geothermal energy production. By combining data from SCAN exploration wells with our own geological expertise, we were able to deliver a more refined and actionable assessment of regional potential.
For De Bilt specifically, the findings are currently less promising. The target reservoir, the Slochteren Formation, shows limited transmissivity and, combined with the reservoir depth, the expected heat output from a doublet or triplet system is not economically viable at this time.
Nevertheless, studies like these are essential. They support responsible decision‑making and ensure that geothermal projects are pursued where they are geologically.

Afgelopen donderdag had PanTerra de gelegenheid om de resultaten en implicaties van de onderzoeksboring BLT‑01 te presenteren tijdens een informatieavond over aardwarmte in De Bilt.
Ongeveer 50 betrokken omwonenden en raadsleden waren aanwezig om meer te horen over de onderzoeksboring die weken lang zichtbaar was nabij De Bilt. Put BLT‑01, geboord als onderdeel van het EBN SCAN‑programma, levert waardevolle inzichten over de Nederlandse ondergrond op en de mogelijkheden voor duurzame aardwarmteontwikkeling in de regio.
PanTerra heeft recent een aardwarmtepotentiestudie uitgevoerd voor de Provincie Utrecht, waarin is onderzocht waar in de provincie de ondergrond geschikt is voor aardwarmtewinning. Door gegevens uit de SCAN‑boringen te combineren met onze eigen geologische expertise, konden we een verfijnde en praktisch toepasbare beoordeling van het regionale potentieel opstellen.
Voor De Bilt vallen de conclusies op dit moment minder gunstig uit. Het doelreservoir, de Formatie van Slochteren, heeft een beperkte doorlaatbaarheid en in combinatie met de diepte van het reservoir is de verwachte warmteproductie met een doublet of triplet momenteel economisch niet rendabel.
Toch zijn dit soort studies essentieel. Ze ondersteunen verantwoorde besluitvorming en zorgen ervoor dat duurzame aardwarmteprojecten worden ontwikkeld op locaties waar de geologische omstandigheden gunstig zijn.
